The Dresses/ Objects Project
I created the The Dresses/ Objects Project as a collaborative, multidisciplinary project in collaboration with over 30 women artists. Phase one of the project started in 2007 when I printed poems from Gertrude Stein’s book, Tender Buttons, on to recycled fabric with a letterpress. Then I sent the fabric prints to various artists and designers to craft into dresses and wearable objects. In 2009, phase two of the project consisted of fashion photo shoots with artists collaborating as dress models. In June 2010, the third phase of the project included an installation of the dresses, photographs, and sewing station in an exhibition complete with multiple live performances and dancers wearing the handmade dresses as costumes.
2010 Exhibition Summary:
The installation was exhibited at Z Space at Theater Artaud in San Francisco, CA from June 25- July 18, 2010. Live performances included a dance installation choreographed by Erin Mei Ling Stuart of EmSpace Dance during the opening weekend, “live art” at the sewing station where I was present making a final dress on Saturday afternoons, and a curated poetry reading with local poets at the closing reception.
